Full Disclosure

Purity Your Skin Will Appreciate

In The Potter’s Hand Inc. offers full disclosure of every ingredient, additive and preservative used in the products because we believe that you have the right to know what you are using on your skin. This policy of disclosure and transparency gives you the opportunity to avoid your allergens, to make the best choice for yourself and protect your heath.

Most chemical compounds applied to the skin in the form of lotion, soap, hair care or skin care products can be absorbed through the skin and affect the body. Perfumes and perfume oils are especially problematic since they can also be absorbed by breathing in the aromatic chemicals they contain. Gluten, allergens or chemicals in items used on the hands, lips or face may cause problems for sensitive individuals when inadvertently transferred to the mouth and ingested.

When you purchase other brands of skincare, hair care, spa, bath or baby products there may also be hidden or unintentional ingredients in the products. These undeclared ingredients can be troublesome for your skin and even dangerous for those with severe allergies, celiac disease, asthma or chemical sensitivities.

There are no hidden ingredients in the products produced by In The Potter’s Hand Inc.

The team at In The Potter's Hand is committed to providing you and all of our customers with complete and accurate allergen information for every product we manufacture. We employ meticulous care with our production methods and offer full disclosure of all our ingredients; a rare occurrence in the skincare industry, where proprietary formulas and hidden ingredients are common. In addition to being free of undesirable and undeclared ingredients, the products comply with Feingold Standards, are never tested on animals, are biodegradable, vegetarian and made in the USA.

Isolation of Production to Prevent Cross Contamination

The use of separate production areas and equipment, no shared production lines, along with hand production of individual batches, maintains tight control over the quality and allergen status. The quality assurance practices and policies that we follow ensure the quality and purity of every product we make. We are unaware of any other company providing this level of attention to allergen status or transparency in production methods.

Our production team adheres to these essential practices and policies so that you can use In The Potter's Hand Products with the utmost confidence.

The general allergen status is determined and maintained by researching ingredients and by consultation with our suppliers. All the products are produced in a dedicated, gluten-free facility. The gluten-free status is verified by off-site, independent lab testing with a sensitivity of <3 ppm.

We are not aware of any other company providing this level of attention to allergen status or transparency in production methods.

Most commercial products will include some ingredients not declared on their ingredient listing.  The following list shows you examples of how unintended and undeclared ingredients may inadvertently end up in other brands of skin care or bath products:

  • Ingredients from one product can contaminate another product during production; a potential problem if several products are made using the same equipment or in close proximity to one another.
  • Solvents, grain alcohol or propylene glycol are often used in the processing of herbal extracts and may remain, unlisted in the final product.
  • Herbs, herbal extracts and some hydrosols also require preservation and these preservatives may not be listed separately on a product's ingredient list.
  • Combinations of preservatives, emulsifiers, or other chemicals are sometimes listed under a single, unfamiliar brand name instead of by their individual chemical names.
  • Antioxidants are sometimes added to plant oils by the manufacturer. These antioxidants extend shelf life and may not be listed on the label. Some of the more common antioxidants used in this way are vitamin E, wheat germ oil, rosemary oleoresin and dodecyl gallate.

Occurrences such as these are not of interest to everyone, but are vitally important to those with health problems triggered or aggravated by specific chemicals, ingredients or plants. In addition to a complete ingredient listing, you will find an attribute and allergen checklist on each individual product page to help you choose the right item for your specific need.

Allergen List

There are two main types of alcohols used in skincare, hair and bath products.

One category includes the aromatic, drying alcohols that we are all familiar with, the ones that evaporate quickly, leave a cooling sensation and often irritate the skin. Alcohol Ingredient names in this category include: isopropyl alcohol, rubbing alcohol, SD Alcohol, denatured Alcohol, ethanol, grain alcohol, vodka etc. This type of alcohol is not well tolerated on the skin by individuals that have sensitive skin, dry skin or any of a long list of skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea or dermatitis.

When people see the word “alcohol” we tend to equate it with these drying alcohols, however there is another other type of alcohol that you will frequently find while reading ingredient lists – this is the category of the fatty alcohols. They are non-drying and non-irritating to skin. These waxy substances are well tolerated and beneficial as a conditioner and emollient. Fatty alcohols can be derived from petrochemical sources or naturally derived from plant oils or animal fats.

Some of the more common alcohol Ingredient names in the fatty acid category include: Cetearyl alcohol, capric alcohol, cetyl alcohol, and stearyl, alcohol.

Our products do NOT contain typical, drying alcohol ingredients. The cetearyl alcohol in the lotion and the conditioner is derived from natural sources of coconut or palm.
Every one of our products is free of casein, other dairy products and any ingredient derived from dairy sources. Please note that the Shea Butter is not a dairy product and does not contain any casein or dairy derivatives. The term “butter” is a descriptive term referring to the texture of the oil.

Corn derivatives are hiding everywhere, in foods of course, but also in the ingredients used to create products for hair and skin. These ingredients are so numerous and so ubiquitous that the search for corn free products becomes a huge struggle. Gluten-Free Savonnerie products do not contain any of these ingredients

We work closely with our suppliers to track allergens as we chose our ingredients; we also research and disclose the original sources used to manufacture the ingredients so that you can use Gluten-Free Savonnerie products with confidence.

Regarding Propylene Glycol used in the products:

The Propylene Glycol used in the Gluten-Free Savonnerie Shampoo, Conditioner and Moisturizer Lotion is synthetic (man made) from petroleum sources, not corn sources.

If Propylene Glycol is of special concern, you may wish to read the ingredient listing on your food packaging carefully as propylene glycol is commonly used in the food industry.

Regarding Glycerin used in the products:

The Glycerin used in the Gluten-Free Savonnerie Conditioner and Moisturizing Lotion is made from palm, not corn sources.

All of our products are free of any colorants or dyes.

Synthetic dyes and colorant chemicals are made from coal tar, a petroleum product; they often trigger contact dermatitis and are suspects in a variety of other health problems. Based on their dubious history in the research, we leave them out of our formulas and view them as entirely unnecessary ingredients.

People tend avoid dyes and colorants for many different reasons including:

  • Allergies
  • Contact Dermatitis or other skin troubles
  • As part the Feingold program for Autism or ADHD
  • Avoidance due to following health regiments for cancer prevention or treatment

Artificial dyes and colorant chemicals are also under scientific investigation for the possibility that they produce anxiety, headaches and hyperactivity.

You can use all of our products confident that they are dye and colorant free.

All of our products products are free of fish derived ingredients and shellfish derived ingredients.

We work closely with our suppliers to track allergens as we chose our ingredients; we also research and disclose the original sources used to manufacture the ingredients so that you can use our products with confidence.

Perfume, cologne, fragrance oils, essential oils, herbal scent, and masking fragrance are all names used to identify fragrances that permeate daily life. People generally enjoy them so the market has responded by adding them to almost everything. It makes sense to choose a scent that appeals to us, in the hope that it will appeal to those around us; or it makes sense until you find out that you have a problem with fragrance.

The reality is that perfumes and synthetic fragrance oils are a major cause of dermatitis, skin allergy or skin irritation, and the problem is growing. They can be composed of a wide variety of synthetic chemicals, including solvents and alcohols, herbal and other plant derived materials or even animal derived ingredients. The problem is compounded by the fact that there can be over a hundred different ingredients in some perfumes and the formulas are normally proprietary so you can never know exactly what they contain.

Fragrances can aggravate other health problems, contribute to depression and are a common cause of headaches. They may become a serious threat to people with chemical sensitivities, asthma or reactive airway disease. These examples are a sampling of why so many people find fragrances offensive and why some need to avoid them altogether.

The products that contain soy include: Cuticle & Nail Oil, all Baby Balms, all Dakota Free Massage Oils, Sweet Body Scrub, Honey Lipz, both deodorants, "Day's End", and Identity Lip Support.

Please NOTE: Some of the products do contain coconut oil and/or shea butter which have not traditionally been recognized as tree nuts, but are currently included on the tree nut allergen list. An allergy to traditional tree nuts does not mean that you will also be allergic to coconut or shea. At this point is appears that only a small minority of nut allergic people are also allergic to coconut or shea, however you may be in that population, so use caution in introducing these allergens.

Coconut and Shea Butter are fully disclosed in each individual product’s ingredient list and on each individual product’s allergen checklist. We are unaware of any other company providing this level of attention to allergen status or transparency in production methods, allergen tracking and ingredient disclosure.
